Samuel Gawith’s story reaches back to 1792, when Thomas Harrison, a Scottish snuff manufacturer, moved his trade and equipment to Kendal in England’s Lake District. His son-in-law, Samuel Gawith, later inherited the business and continued the tradition of tobacco making. One of Samuel’s sons carried on the family name, while the other partnered with Henry Hoggarth to establish Gawith, Hoggarth & Co.

Although Samuel Gawith and Gawith Hoggarth developed their own distinctive blends, the two houses remain closely connected to this day, sharing the same historic manufacturing facility in Kendal and preserving techniques that trace back more than two centuries. Many Samuel Gawith tobaccos also reflect the spirit of Britain’s old purity laws, which restricted excessive flavoring and encouraged manufacturers to let the natural quality of the leaf speak for itself.

A “bothy” is a simple, remote shelter traditionally used by hikers and travelers, particularly throughout the Scottish Highlands. Open to anyone seeking refuge from the elements, these rustic huts operate on a communal understanding: use what you need, leave the shelter in good order, and replenish supplies whenever possible for the next traveler.

Samuel Gawith Bothy Flake was created for the Kearvaig Pipe Club, founded in 2012 at the remote Kearvaig Bothy on Scotland’s northern coast. The blend combines rich Virginias with smoky Latakia and a touch of Highland malt whisky, creating a deep, warming tobacco perfectly suited to a quiet evening while the wind and rain gather outside.
